Passerby Hello
Smiles can be filled with lies
A way to please the passersby
A friendly wave or “How are you?”
Is simply the polite thing to do
The only right answer is “fine thanks”
No time for stories for goodness sakes
Do people try to look interested on purpose
When all they really do is merely scratch the surface
Ask yourself, am I listening to this friend in need
Or am I thinking of my to-do list, books to read
Is your life really more important than theirs
All they need’s a pair of eager ears
So stop, relax and put your life on pause
Be present for others, be patient because
What we want is the same in return
Focus on others, take a moment to learn
It’s not about you or them or me
Genuine care for all will set us free
So next time you pass a friend on the street
Don’t ignore them, look down and shuffle your feet
Flash a true smile and if it’s not returned
Ask what’s wrong, with real concern
Don’t think of yourself, your job or your list
Making time for others is a mutual gift
